Nihongo Tint is a Chrome browser extension that helps Japanese learners read Japanese text on the web. This policy explains what data the extension handles and what it does not.
Nihongo Tint does not:
The extension stores a small amount of preference data in your browser's local storage (chrome.storage.local). This data never leaves your device. Specifically:
You can clear this data at any time by removing the extension or visiting your browser's site-data settings.
The extension makes requests to public, unauthenticated APIs when you actively interact with it:
| Service | Purpose | When |
|---|---|---|
| jisho.org | Looking up dictionary definitions | Only when you click a highlighted Japanese word |
| tatoeba.org | Fetching example sentences | Only when you click a highlighted Japanese word |
| Chrome Built-in AI APIs (Gemini Nano, on-device) | Generating vocabulary flashcards and comprehension quizzes | Only when you click "Vocabulary flashcards" or "Comprehension quiz" |
| Chrome Built-in Translator API (on-device) | Translating English text to Japanese on YouTube | Only on YouTube pages when enabled |
| Browser SpeechSynthesis (on-device) | Reading words aloud | Only when you click a play button |
These requests contain only the specific word or text you asked to look up or play. They do not include your identity, browsing history, or any other context.
All Chrome Built-in AI requests run entirely on your device — they do not contact Google's servers.
To color-code Japanese parts of speech, the extension reads the visible text of pages you visit using standard browser content-script APIs. This reading happens entirely in your browser; the text is never transmitted anywhere by us.
Nihongo Tint does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children. There is no account system.
If we change this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date and post a notice in the extension's Chrome Web Store listing.
